CafePress is running a contest for new art for the Flip Mono Digital Camcorder, and I thought “Hey, who doesn’t need a breast-plated, rocket-powered robot woman thingy on their pocket camcorder?”

My friend Rich and I are doing a piece for our town’s Christmas Tree lighting event. Now, as with all illustration projects, there are ideas that have popped into my head that I know just will not fly for the final piece, and yet are so much fun I have to at least rough them out. The caption for this would read “Let’s Get Lit!”

Yup, nothin’ says small town holiday celebration like a liquored-up Santa Claus.

Fortunately, this drawing is not based on any recent event in my life. It’s actually a requested piece for our facilities manager here at work, to be used as a door sign when a restroom is being cleaned.

It also has another more sinister purpose. Scientific research has shown that anyone staring at this drawing for more than 2.7 seconds will lose all bladder control. Hope the restroom nearest you isn’t out of order.

Because I’m just too snazzy for my own good.

I’m doodling a page full of people smiling, and it occurs to me that each person, although smiling, is conveying a different emotion. So, for the life of me, I don’t know if I was feeling giddy, sneaky, or nervous when I doodled this one. Maybe I was feeling nervously giddy over something sneaky I had done.

Sometimes a guy just wants to draw a distorted image of a nervous woodland creature, is that so wrong?

I got an email the other day that had the phrase “rule of thumb” in it (the origin of which has absolutely NOTHING to do with spousal abuse, by the way), so I- being the impulsive little doodler that I am- had to draw it, of course.

My daughter loves for me to tell her stories about her adventures with Humphrey the Flying Sheep. So far, they’ve flown down to Florida to see her grandmother, Kaysey; had a picnic with all the other flying sheep in their homeland (the clouds, of course); and chased runaway birthday party balloons through the treetops.

Ah, the joys of a nice healthy hiatus….gets your perspective properly adjusted, it does.

It had gotten to the point where I wasn’t enjoying doodling as much, because I had started looking at them through the filter of “will this make a good blog post?” That, and well-intentioned friends were constantly making doodle suggestions. Both things were in direct opposition to the purpose my doodling serves, which is, of course, the expression of random, spur-of-the-moment impulses. I’m going to fight hard with myself from now on to keep this blog within those parameters.

This might mean more sporadic posting than before. Gaps of doodle nothingness. Or it may mean days where I post four or five times in just a few hours. Who knows.
