An illustration for a digital article to be published in September on the In Touch Ministries site.
It’s a bird with the head of a chicken, and the body of a duck. Wearing a bow tie.
Sometimes, I still can’t believe I get to do this for a living, folks. I am truly blessed.

Just a random sampling of some of my work for web articles on the In Touch Ministries site. Again, let me just say how much getting to work in a wide variety of styles appeals to my personality.

One of the things I love most about being the senior staff illustrator for In Touch Ministries is the diversity of styles and techniques I get to use in my illustrations. As opposed to what many illustrators out there have to do as a necessity (it’s easier to market your skills if you have an identifiable style), I don’t feel the pressure to have a certain “look” to my work; I get to play around with different approaches, depending on what I feel a particular article calls for.
Cases in point being the two illustrations below. This first one is for a piece entitled “When a Gift Becomes a Given”. In the article, the author speaks of a certain modern art print, and how what had at first been a piece that made him stop and ponder every time he saw it eventually became something he didn’t even notice. I wanted to pull that modern art motif into the accompanying illustration (created using ArtRage):

This next one is for a piece entitled “Bringing Bethlehem Home”. A family starts a new Christmas tradition of trekking through the snow on Christmas night to visit a tiny manger scene set up in humble surroundings. I chose a crisp, clean approach to convey the cold night air, and a close-up of the Christ-child figurine in a small, mittened hand to capture the intimacy of the setting (done in Photoshop):

The October 2014 cover of In Touch magazine. I tried to mimic the shapes and textures of a folk art woodcut in this one.

Three of eight portrait illustrations I’m doing of some of my co-workers for an upcoming article in the December 2014 issue of In Touch magazine. I get all geeky over the cool layers of color and texture watercolors create, and the way that contrasts with the pen-and-ink line art.

Yet another piece for the upcoming November issue of In Touch magazine. This time, it’s an article by Andy Stanley about what God expects us to do when He blesses us with riches.

Two of my latest pieces for a project about the importance of spending quiet, distraction-free time with God.

A graphite illustration of Jonah (left) and Paul (right) that will be used as part of a larger, full-color piece for a magazine article at work. The article compares and contrasts Paul and Jonah’s responses to God.
