Two thumbnails from a project I’m currently working on. The intent is to capture a travel journal feel by employing loose pencils and watercolor washes, with mood being more important than detail.

January 21, 2021NOT A DOODLE: Baby Elephant Bye-bye
September 13, 2018
A co-worker of mine is moving all the way across the stinkin’ country. She loves elephants, so I did this piece for her as our creative department’s way of saying ‘farewell’. I wanted to capture a field journal type of mood, so I kept the pencil work somewhat loose and the watercolor washes simple and monochromatic.
NOT DOODLES: Portraits! Pointillism! Pens!
April 6, 2018I realize I’ve been very lax about posting things here on my blog lately, so I’m going to try to remedy that. Here’s the latest portraits I did for the upcoming July 2018 issue of In Touch Magazine.

NOT A DOODLE: Would you call a chicken-duck hybrid a “chuck”?
July 20, 2017
An illustration for a digital article to be published in September on the In Touch Ministries site.
It’s a bird with the head of a chicken, and the body of a duck. Wearing a bow tie.
Sometimes, I still can’t believe I get to do this for a living, folks. I am truly blessed.

NOT A DOODLE:’Nother Portrait, or Perfect Imperfections
December 14, 2016Don’t get me wrong. I’m not implying my painting is perfect. In fact, I think that part of the joy of painting is knowing you will NEVER be perfect, but pursuing perfection anyway.
No, the title of this post refers to the beauty of watercolor washes. No crisp, clean lines. No smooth, solid fields of color. There are always blemishes. Always unpredictable interactions with the paper. Always imperfections.
And that makes it perfect.
(By the way, this one is for the March-April 2017 issue of In Touch magazine.)

NOT A DOODLE: Back to the portraits
September 29, 2016Back to portrait mode for the January 2017 issue of In Touch magazine. I know I’ve said it before, but I absolutely LOVE the textures achieved with watercolor washes and the way their organic, mottled appearance contrasts with the dark lines and stippling of the pen and ink drawing.
