This trilling little troubadour was done for the now-defunct Black & White, an independent Birmingham, Alabama, city paper, almost twenty years ago. They would publish an annual city guide to all things Birminghamish, and commissioned me to provide the illustration for the “performing arts” section of the 1996 issue. I lost touch with them all years ago, but recall how much fun the team there was to work with. The printed version, like so many other newspapers, fell victim to the digital age in early 2013. There had been plans to come back as a web-based platform for local alternative news, but the publisher and creative force behind it, Chuck Geiss, passed away that same year, so the magazine has, for all intents and purposes, died with him.
The illustration is done in watercolor and colored pencil.

Got commissioned recently to do this mascot illustration for the Crimson Kayaker blog. Then I started thinking, “Dang. How big would a kayak have to be for an elephant to fit in it?” I’m thinking that sucker would have to be a converted 35-foot cabin cruiser. And the blades on the paddle would be the size of dinner tables.
But, then again, I have been known to overthink things sometimes.

My brother-in-law Hal is one of the most gung-ho Alabama football fans I know. The man lives and breathes all things Crimson Tide. Now, I went to Auburn, but let me say right up front I couldn’t possibly care less about college sports. I couldn’t care less if you injected an additional gallon of collegiate sports apathy into my veins.
That being said, the Iron Bowl is coming up this weekend, so that means the entire state of Alabama will shut down on Saturday. Many people will pour out a year’s-worth of passion, hostility and devotion in a 3 hour orgy of screaming, cheering, crying and cussing. Hal will probably be one of the loudest.
So, this doodle is for you, Hal. Hope your team makes you cheer ’til you’re hoarse.
