Two thumbnails from a project I’m currently working on. The intent is to capture a travel journal feel by employing loose pencils and watercolor washes, with mood being more important than detail.

NOT DOODLES: Portraits! Pointillism! Pens!
April 6, 2018I realize I’ve been very lax about posting things here on my blog lately, so I’m going to try to remedy that. Here’s the latest portraits I did for the upcoming July 2018 issue of In Touch Magazine.

NOT DOODLES: Any Questions?
March 19, 2018
Every month, I’ve been tasked with illustrating a question mark for an online article series entitled “The Ministry of Asking Questions”. It’s been a fun challenge approaching the same symbol from different angles each time.

NOT A DOODLE: Would you call a chicken-duck hybrid a “chuck”?
July 20, 2017
An illustration for a digital article to be published in September on the In Touch Ministries site.
It’s a bird with the head of a chicken, and the body of a duck. Wearing a bow tie.
Sometimes, I still can’t believe I get to do this for a living, folks. I am truly blessed.

NOT DOODLES: Web Article Exclusives
March 7, 2017Just a random sampling of some of my work for web articles on the In Touch Ministries site. Again, let me just say how much getting to work in a wide variety of styles appeals to my personality.

NOT DOODLES: Of Prayerful Prophets and the Pressures of the Daily Grind
December 1, 2015Was trying to track down some illustration files from early last year, came across these two editorial pieces, and realized I never posted them.
The first is a graphic representation of the prophet Elijah, with the detail image showing how I tried to include symbols on his coat that represented different moments in his life where he encountered God in a mighty way. The black feathers represent the ravens that fed him when he was hiding in the desert; the green leaves for when he heard God in the quiet rustling; and the flames for when God consumed Elijah’s offering in a firestorm to prove His might over the false god, Baal.
The second piece was about keeping a balance in the way we spend our time, avoiding getting caught up in busy-ness. (But I’m sure none of us ever have that problem. Right?)
The top piece is done in acrylics, while the bottom piece is watercolor and colored pencil.

NOT DOODLES: Web-exclusive Wackiness
November 20, 2015These are the first three in a fun little collection of illustrations I’m doing for a web-exclusive series on the In Touch website. All quick, loose, and washy; they’re a blast to work on.
