So, “why is it ‘sort of a doodle’?”, you might ask.

What? You didn’t ask? Well, I’m gonna tell ya anyway, Mister Fancy Pants!

It started as a meeting doodle. No, really. I know you’re shocked. But then it was just sitting there on my desk, minding its own business, when… BAM! I watercolored the daylights out of that sucker, thus elevating it from mere “doodle” to the lofty status of “sort of doodle” for all eternity. I’m sure it’s grateful; you can see it in his eyes.

Three of eight portrait illustrations I’m doing of some of my co-workers for an upcoming article in the December 2014 issue of In Touch magazine. I get all geeky over the cool layers of color and texture watercolors create, and the way that contrasts with the pen-and-ink line art.

Other than baseball caps, I’ve never been much of one for hats. So I find it interesting that they seem to feature prominently in so many of my doodles. Some sort of subconscious fedora fixation, I guess.

Apparently I was taking too long to doodle him. I told him he had better lighten up or I was going to erase that scowl right of his face, but he just kept on. As you can see, he won the standoff.

To be honest, I’m a little intimidated by him.
